While physical health certainly plays a part in our well being, organizers of the Third Annual Women's Health and Wellness Conference also promoted the examination of all aspects of life when considering overall health during the event Saturday at North Tenneha Church of Christ in Tyler.
Organizers estimate more than 150 women attended the conference and luncheon that provided holistic approaches to one's wellbeing.
Trinity Mother Frances Hospitals and Clinics provided free mammograms, while speakers discussed health issues including cancer, heart disease, diet and exercise.
Life skills, depression and dealing with anxiety and stress were also among the day's topics.
Tyler attorney Kyntoshia Brown provided lessons in will preparation, estate planning and other legal matters in financial wellness sessions.
Gwen Holman, 72, received her annual mammogram at the event and said she was enlightened by the practical aspect of the conference.
"My soul got full spiritually, physically and financially," she said. "It also helped me to think about re-evaluating my eating habits. Overall, I was very impressed with it."
Event coordinators said the conference allowed women to embrace their wellness and adhere to preventative health measures throughout each stage in life.
"It's more than just a health fair," said Rubye Kendrick, physical therapist and coordinator. "We really wanted people to have dialogues with the experts and have interactive sessions. We feel it is vital to take responsibility of our health."
Registered dietician and coordinator Maxine Caldwell added, "There are many facets to our life and we have to touch on all components."
Clinician Shirley McKellar said she encourages people to create a "health resume" and communicate openly with doctors to ensure you receive the best care. Ultimately, prevention is key to driving down the costs of health care, she said.
"We really want people to take charge of their own health and the costs you incur while go down as you get ahead of it," she said.
Next year, the organizers hope to expand the interactive sessions, particularly the financial and estate planning tracks.
The health conference and luncheon was sponsored by the North Tenneha Church of Christ's Women's Health Ministry and the Gamma Omicron Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Inc.
